Dear AuntMinnie Europe member,
This week we’re featuring special in-person coverage of this year’s German radiology congress, RöKo 2026, which runs through 15 May in Leipzig. The congress has been characterized so far by a notably vibrant and youthful energy, as well as an emphasis on interventional radiology (IR) and the blurring of disciplines between IR and diagnostic radiology.
There were also political discussions, including a session on the difficult financial situation for hospitals in Germany -- and the need for radiologists need to get involved in hospital reform (English, Deutsch). And the opening session of RöKo 2026 set the tone for the congress motto “without borders” (English, Deutsch).
In a talk at RöKo 2026, GE HealthCare Global Chief Medical Officer Prof. Mathias Goyen discussed current implementation challenges for AI (English, Deutsch). We also spoke with Prof. Fabian Bamberg of the University Hospital Freiburg to get his thoughts on radiomics and AI validation (English, Deutsch).
Prof. Marcus Katoh highlighted training opportunities for interventional radiology at the new Campus for IR in a video interview (English, Deutsch). Also, Dr. Florian Gassert of TUM University Hospital in Munich discussed the potential of dark-field radiography (English, Deutsch) in another video interview.
Efforts to attract the next generation of radiologists were quite evident and this initiative seems to have been highly successful. We spoke with three radiology residents to get their thoughts on the congress and why they chose their specialty (English, Deutsch).
RöKo 2026 ends on 15 May, but you can catch up on all of our coverage of RöKo 2026 in our special ShowCast. Also, you can access all of our coverage of this week’s annual meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) over on our sister site, AuntMinnie.
Meanwhile in France, a battle is continuing over damaging reimbursement cuts for imaging studies.
Researchers have also found some interesting results after analyzing the capabilities of commercially available lung nodule analysis AI software.
See below for our other top stories from the week.
