Video from ECR: Saif Afat takes radiology outside the reading room

Vienna - In an interview at ECR 2026, Prof. Dr. Saif Afat of the University Hospital Tübingen discussed how CT scans of ancient mummies, from Ötzi the Iceman to Egyptian pharaohs, offer surprising links between radiology, culture, and history.

The theme reflects Afat’s broader approach to the field. Alongside chairing the ECR session on imaging ancient remains, he also embraces “outside-the-box” thinking when designing congress programs.

At 38, Afat will serve as co-president of the German Radiology Congress (RöKo 2026), where he plans to introduce creative formats that connect science, culture, and new perspectives on radiology.

In the interview, he also touched on sustainability in MRI and the growing importance of leadership and soft skills in radiology training.
