Week in Review: Is breast MRI worth the recalls? | CT's role for novel coronavirus | New statement on CT lung cancer screening

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Breast MRI has many potential benefits, particularly its sensitivity, but a downside seems to be the relatively high recall rate.

Researchers from leading facilities in Dublin have looked closely at this issue, and their findings deserve scrutiny in our Women's Imaging Community. While we're thinking about breast MRI, the results are expected soon for the EA1141 multicenter study on abbreviated MRI compared with tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening. We intend to cover that major study, too, so watch this space.

Global concern continues to grow about the novel coronavirus (known as 2019-nCoV or, more recently, SARS-CoV-2). Authors from Wuhan, China, have written an editorial for European Radiology about the role of imaging in cases of infection. Learn more in the CT Community.

Another important publication this week in European Radiology was the joint statement on CT lung cancer screening by the European Society of Radiology and the European Respiratory Society. Multidisciplinary support for CT screening finally appears to be gathering pace across the continent, and it will be fascinating to see what new findings are presented in this area at ECR 2020, which begins on 11 March.

Despite studies showing ultrasound's efficacy for some common rheumatological procedures, the modality is still not regularly used in many rheumatology departments. However, a new Italian study suggests ultrasound may be a fast and cost-effective addition to synovial fluid aspirations and drug injections. Head over to our Ultrasound Community.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) can develop in many different organs of the body, so it's useful for general radiologists to be aware of them. A new study has found that MRI can be particularly valuable for differentiating gallbladder NETs from adenocarcinomas and for evaluating their prognostic values. Visit the MRI Community.
