SOLACE+ project to support lung cancer screening in 19 countries

The Strengthening the Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe – Pilots, Learning, Uptake and Sustainability (SOLACE+) project launched on 1 November with support from the European Society of Radiology (ESR).

The project brings together 46 partners from 22 EU member states and Norway to help 19 countries implement low-dose CT (LDCT) lung cancer screening programs.

The three-year project, co-funded by the EU4Health program, is coordinated by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research with the ESR having a supporting role. It will help countries design, launch, and evaluate screening programs, with a focus on reaching high-risk and vulnerable populations, strengthening quality assurance and workforce capacity, and addressing smoking cessation and adherence after baseline screening. The project will also evaluate and implement AI tools for nodule detection, risk stratification, and workflow optimization while maintaining human oversight.

SOLACE+ builds on the original SOLACE project, which screened more than 30,000 people in 11 countries.
