AuntMinnieEurope.com Interventional Radiology Insider

Dear AuntMinnie Europe Interventional Radiology Insider,

This spring, interventional radiology had main character energy, at two major congresses and beyond.

At the European Conference on Interventional Oncology ECIO 2026 in Basel, the first positive randomized trials combining ablation with systemic immunotherapy arrived, making the field question what comes next. Immunotherapy combinations, AI augmentation, and a call to ambition from Prof. Afshin Gangi's inaugural Thierry De Baère Lecture set the tone.

Meanwhile at Germany's radiology congress RöKo 2026 in Leipzig, IR claimed its own space for the first time with the newly launched DeGIR Campus, booked-out, buzzing, and full of the next generation. Prof. Marcus Katoh was excited and Prof. Frank Wacker was highlighting what this means for the field's future. Take a look at their video interviews, also available in German.

Middle meningeal artery embolization for chronic subdural hematoma is becoming routine. German data from Heidelberg and Düsseldorf now adds to eight randomized trials, six of them positive.

Other highlights: focal laser ablation shows promise for prostate cancer, pelvic congestion syndrome and fibroid embolization remain underreferred, and radiographers are stepping further into interventional roles.
