French radiologists support Cancer Plan

The French Professional Radiology Council has given its backing to French President François Hollande's Cancer Plan to promote screening for the disease.

The council endorsed:

  • Better access to screening and care across France
  • A reduction in the time of an appointment for an MRI to ensure more rapid and effective treatment for all patients
  • The development of interventional radiology to facilitate less invasive procedures for patients and less cost to the community
  • Support for breast ultrasound screening for cancer for any patient who may not be able to afford the scan
  • Tomosynthesis as another method to screen for cancer

The goal for an MRI appointment in France is a wait of 20 days, while the previous Cancer Plan foresaw a period of 15 days and 10 days in areas of high cancer risk.

Reducing delays improves the chances of patients, both in oncology for other diseases, the council stated.
