Vienna -– Scientific publishing is in the midst of a transition, Prof. Jaap Stoker said as this year’s Editors’ Forum wrapped up in Vienna. Rising submission numbers have increased the demand for reviewers just as journals are finding it more difficult to recruit them.
Stoker, an abdominal radiologist at Amsterdam University Medical Center and professor at the University of Amsterdam, spoke in an video interview about these challenges and his new role. He will take over as editor-in-chief of European Radiology Experimental in January 2027, following a gradual handover from Prof. Francesco Sardanelli.
“Novelty is, at the moment, something that’s really human,” Stoker said, particularly when it is assessed from a clinical perspective. The same principle shapes what he considers a compelling paper. Technological sophistication may suit an experimental journal, but it becomes considerably more valuable when paired with “an unmet need” and a rigorous study design.
