The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) has installed the Rev. Mike Kirby, PhD, as its president for the 2026 to 2028 term.
The inauguration took place at an inauguration event in London on 16 September, and his two-year term begins in October.
Kirby is honorary lecturer in radiotherapy physics at the University of Liverpool and honorary senior lecturer in cancer sciences at the University of Manchester. He previously worked as a radiotherapy physicist in the NHS from 1988 to 2010, most recently as consultant clinical scientist and head of radiotherapy physics (satellite centres) at The Christie, and he is a former chair of the BIR's Oncology and Radiotherapy Special Interest Group.
Kirby succeeds Dr. Nick Screaton, whose two-year term as president is ending. Screaton presented two Distinguished Service Medals at the inauguration event.
The medal is awarded at the discretion of the BIR President to individuals who have made a special contribution to the BIR. Screaton presented this year's medals to Lucy Stewart, BIR Executive Assistant and Office Manager, and Richard Evans, former Chief Executive of the Society and College of Radiographers.
