IBA gets order for 12 cyclotrons for U.S. PET tracer network

Belgium-based particle accelerator vendor Ion Beam Applications (IBA) has received an order for 12 Cyclone KIUBE 300 cyclotrons from an unnamed global radiopharmaceutical producer and distributor.

The customer plans to deploy the systems as a PET tracer production network across multiple U.S. sites, IBA said. The cyclotrons will initially be configured for high-volume commercial production of F-18-based PET tracers, with each system equipped with multiple Nirta HCFT helium cooling-free F-18 targets, according to the vendor. The contract also covers facility design, installation and commissioning, and operator and maintenance training.

The KIUBE platform can produce up to 35 curies of F-18 in a single two-hour dual-beam run, the company said. A KIUBE 300 system typically costs between €2.5 million and €5 million ($2.8 million to $5.6 million U.S.), depending on configuration, according to IBA. The total value of the order wasn’t disclosed.
