Israeli institute launches 3D printing center

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa has launched a new center for 3D printing cells, tissues, and organs based on patients' CT scans, according to a report from the Times of Israel.

The 3D Bioprinting Center for Cell and Biomaterial houses a 3D printer that translates data from CT scans into scaffolds and cells that eventually grow into human-like tissue.

Clinicians may be able to use this 3D-bioprinted tissue to support regenerative medicine therapies and organ transplantation, noted Shulamit Levenberg, PhD, head of the institution's new center. The 3D printer is equipped with printing heads that have an accuracy of 0.001 mm and move at various speeds, which allows users to orient cells into specific tissue structures, the Times of Israel reported.
