The ESR has added a new chapter, "Prescription of Radiologic Imaging: Ingredients for Good Practice," to its free Modern Radiology eBook. Authored by Dr. Christoph Becker, the chapter includes 13 sections, including practical examples, take-home messages, and a test at the end.
The chapter summarizes key points related to good practice of prescribing diagnostic imaging examinations for current and future referrers. It also discusses how common shortcomings can affect the quality of healthcare, addressing the following points, among others:
- Prescription of complex radiological studies should be considered as a medical act and should not be delegated to administrative personnel. Delegating the prescription process to nonmedical administrative personnel is usually inadequate if optimal results are to be achieved.
- Duplicate examinations due to lack of communication between treating physicians drive diagnostic imaging overuse. The chapter includes ways to avoid overuse and incorrect use.
- Safety management in the context of MRI means the indication for MRI may have to be reconsidered in some situations.
Expanded to 29 chapters, the Modern Radiology eBook is designed to meet the needs of learners at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Chapters are based on the contributions of over 100 recognized European experts, referring to both general technical and organ-based clinical imaging topics.
