Social media holds promise for radiology education

A new scoping review published in the European Journal of Radiology found that while social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn are popular for sharing radiology education content, there is limited evidence that they measurably improve knowledge or performance compared to traditional learning methods.

Social media and radiology education appear to be a match made in heaven: both rely heavily on visual content, and annotated images, clinical cases, quizzes, and short videos lend themselves naturally to engaging digital learning.

Against this backdrop, a new scoping review finds strong interest in using social media for radiology education, but limited evidence that it measurably improves knowledge or performance, according to research published in the European Journal of Radiology.

A team led by Manuel Signorini, MD, a radiologist at S. Maria della Misericordia Hospital, ULSS 5 Polesana, in Rovigo, Italy, explored whether enthusiasm for social media in radiology education is matched by evidence of measurable educational benefits. 

The researchers found that the literature currently describes how learners use social media more convincingly than it demonstrates improvements in knowledge or performance.

Heterogeneous and largely unstructured

Social media has become an important informal learning environment in medical education, the authors wrote. In radiology, platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, and Facebook allow educators to share clinical cases, quizzes, short videos, and expert commentary beyond the traditional classroom, they added.

Integration into formal radiology education remains heterogeneous and largely unstructured, the authors explained. The European Society of Radiology's undergraduate education white paper does not mention social media as a potential educational resource at all, they added, highlighting a disconnect between contemporary learning practices and formal recommendations. 

Thus, in this review, the researchers set out to map the evidence on social media's educational role in radiology training.

Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), the researchers searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the ESR's EPOS database for English-language records published between 2015 and 2025. 

Two reviewers independently screened records and assessed full texts, and because of marked methodological heterogeneity, the team synthesized findings narratively rather than statistically.

From 839 identified records, the team removed 183 duplicates and screened 656; 38 reports were assessed in full text, and 10 were included: four surveys or questionnaire studies, two educational initiatives with participant evaluations, and four comparative or pre/post studies. Most findings concerned educational use, adoption, preferences, and perceived usefulness, the researchers found.

Researchers call for stronger evidence

In secondary results, knowledge or performance outcomes were assessed in four heterogeneous studies, with findings ranging from no significant knowledge benefit or comparable retention to favorable results in small, context-specific settings.

Future research should use predefined educational endpoints, validated assessment tools, longer follow-up periods, and multicenter designs, according to the authors. They also flagged the need to address patient privacy, image anonymization, and the risk that engagement-driven algorithms could amplify incomplete or misleading content.

For now, the researchers suggested, social media offers an accessible and engaging complement to formal radiology education. Demonstrating which formats produce lasting improvements in learning will be the next step toward realizing its full potential.
