Radius Diagnostics wins CEVC award

Radius Diagnostics, a start-up firm developing an ultralightweight x-ray scanner, is one of three companies to win a Civica European Venture Contest (CEVC) award and a prize of 30,000 euros ($39,000 U.S.).

The awards are given to companies with the potential to dramatically affect their industry and contribute to increasing European competitiveness and growth. More than 800 companies competed for one of three awards.

Radius Diagnostics is developing a scanner based on what it calls microemitter x-ray technology (MAX) that could enable the production of a scanner that is 20 times lighter than any existing portable x-ray system. Such a system could enable x-ray imaging to be performed at the scene of an accident or anywhere in a healthcare facility, expediting diagnosis and treatment. The ultralightweight imaging scanner is also being designed for security and industrial applications.

The company is based at the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre at Harwell, U.K. CEO Mark Evans received the award for the company at a 14 December ceremony held in Madrid.
