Researchers from the U.K. and Germany have used ultrahigh-field functional MRI to produce a precise topographic map of the representation of touch in area 3b of the somatosensory cortex -- a region thought to only respond to mechanical stimulation.

Researchers in the U.S. and the Netherlands have observed auditory responses in the human somatosensory cortex, a region of the brain usually dedicated to processing touch. They measured functional MRI signal changes following a frequency discrimination task.
