The European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) said it welcomes more discussion to ensure that health care is firmly anchored in the European Commission’s recently unveiled budget proposal for 2028-2034.
“This is essential to secure progress in diagnostics and therapies and to meet the growing healthcare needs of Europe’s citizens,” the EANM said in a post.
The proposal sets out plans for the next Multiannual Financial Framework, covering 2028 to 2034 and amounting to almost €2 trillion. EANM noted that Horizon Europe -- the EU’s €95.5 billion research and innovation framework program for 2021-2027 -- would see a €175 billion bump, yet health will no longer be treated as a separate priority, but instead be grouped with other sectors.
“For nuclear medicine, this raises concerns over visibility and the level of dedicated investment in medical research and innovation,” the EANM said.
The proposal now enters the negotiation phase between member states and the European Parliament, and agreement is not expected for many months, the EANM noted.
