The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is moving ahead with plans to publish three new organ-based spinoff scientific journals.
European Radiology Abdomen, European Radiology Breast, and European Radiology Cardiovascular and Thoracic were created in close collaboration with their respective subspecialty societies, according to the ESR.
In an editorial posted on January 22, Prof. Dr. Bernd Hamm, chief editor of ESR Journals and editor in chief of European Radiology, wrote that: "Together, [the new journals] represent a natural and progressive expansion of our mission to support excellence in radiological research, from technical developments to clinical practice, including the entire spectrum of screening, diagnosis, and interventional settings .... we see abundant opportunities for fruitful and enduring partnerships among all ESR journals."
European Radiology Abdomen has been developed in collaboration with the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) and the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR). Under the editorial leadership of Prof. Valérie Vilgrain from Paris, the journal aims to bridge science and clinical practice by publishing both scientific and clinical content.
Next, European Radiology Breast is the result of collaboration with the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI). Led by Editor-in-Chief Prof. Sophia Zackrisson from Malmö, Sweden, this journal focuses on advancing the field of imaging for breast-related healthcare.
Meanwhile, European Radiology Cardiovascular and Thoracic is dedicated to advancing multimodal cardiovascular and thoracic imaging. With Editor-in-Chief Prof. Hatem Alkadhi from Zurich, the journal will cover both clinical and technical developments with the goal of improving health outcomes for patients. The European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR) and the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI) are collaborating.
All three journals will be published as "Gold Open Access" titles, freely accessible through Springer Nature Link, according to the ESR.
Hamm also cited an acceptance rate of between 15% and 20% for ESR's established journals, European Radiology, Insights into Imaging, and European Radiology Experimental. In 2025, the journals received a record number of 9,000 submissions, he wrote.
