Spanish researchers tie midlife heart disease to Alzheimer's
Researchers from Spain have used PET to discover that individuals in their 50s with signs of cardiovascular disease also have reduced brain metabolism in areas connected with Alzheimer's disease. The findings provide a link between brain and heart health.

Siemens launches wide-bore midfield MRI scanner
A new midfield MRI scanner with a wide 80-cm bore, Magnetom Free.Max, was among the products unveiled by Siemens Healthineers at a virtual event held on 17 November. The vendor also took the wraps off the Syngo Carbon image and data management platform.

New analysis underlines value of lung cancer screening
In a study of eight randomized controlled trials involving over 90,000 people, CT lung cancer screening produced a relative risk reduction of 0.81 for death from lung cancer and an absolute risk reduction of 0.4%. Screening did not reduce all-cause mortality, however.

German group refines PET technique for prostate cancer
Researchers from Essen have used a PET-based optical imaging method known as Cerenkov luminescence imaging to highlight the presence of cancer cells after prostate cancer surgery. They published their results in the October edition of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Siemens to acquire Varian in deal worth 14B euros
Siemens Healthineers announced on 2 August that it has agreed to buy Varian Medical Systems in a deal valued at $16.4 billion (13.8 billion euros). The purchase represents an important strategic move for Siemens into cancer treatment, and it is being called the biggest healthcare acquisition of the year.
