Week in Review: Errors come under scrutiny | New advice on lung nodules | Tribute to Sarah Jenkins

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Cardiac MRI scans can be difficult to interpret and diagnose because of the complex imaging process and the need for specialist knowledge, but an error rate of 37% is a cause of great concern.

An audit scrutinized 1,224 cases between 2013 and 2020 involving the same consultant (or senior) radiologist. The long-awaited initial findings have now been unveiled. Find out more in our news report.

Two leading lights in European radiology, Prof. Mathias Prokop and Dr. Annemiek Snoeckx, have collaborated with other top thoracic imaging specialists to produce new guidelines on the management of lung nodules. Their work deserves a close look.

It’s evident from the tributes posted about Dr. Sarah Jenkins that she was a highly talented neurointerventional radiologist, but she also had a genuine interest in patient safety and helping colleagues in need. Her family has been very open about her death, and clearly, they want others to learn from this tragedy.

On a more upbeat note, emergency radiology specialist Dr. Fausto Labruto, PhD, is a keen advocate of fostering a work environment that promotes satisfaction and happiness for staff. He’s convinced that practical measures can help to avoid stressors such as interruptions and inefficiencies.

Finally, Italian researchers have found that delirium, which is common in elderly hospitalized COVID-19 patients, is linked to poor health outcomes. The symptoms of the condition often overlap with those of dementia, and it is underdiagnosed in many cases, they say. Don’t miss our article on the topic.
