Week in Review: Total-body PET can prove a game changer | New U.K. breast screening data | EuroMinnies 2021 gets underway

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

When a leading expert on hybrid imaging says total-body PET brings significant clinical benefits and may well be a game changer, it's time to sit up and take notice.

In a keynote lecture at the recent Conference on Hybrid Imaging Live, Prof. Thomas Beyer from Vienna asked if total-body PET might be the next major advancement for the modality. He's a measured and calm person, but his enthusiasm for the technology was evident for all to see. Don't miss our news report in the Molecular Imaging Community.

Significant new breast screening data from England emerged this week. A large study showed a 37% reduction in mortality for women screened at least once, corresponding to about nine breast cancer deaths prevented between the ages of 55 and 79 for every 1,000 women attending screening between the ages of 50 and 69. 2020 was definitely a year for the women in the annual EuroMinnies awards, as they collected all four "people prizes." Will the men raise their game in 2021? The nomination process has begun, so now is the time for you, our members, to get involved and make your selections. The semifinalists will be revealed on 17 December.

Cost-effectiveness remains a buzzword when it comes to technology, but it's very difficult to know exactly what this means in practice and how much importance one should attach to it. Interventional radiologist Dr. Chris Hammond has addressed this topic in a thought-provoking column in the CT Community.

Turning to the pandemic, a COVID-19-specific CT reporting system called CO-RADS is helping clinicians quickly diagnose the disease when patients present in the emergency department. Our report looks at the results of a Dutch study published on 17 November in Radiology.

Finally, the RSNA annual meeting begins on 29 November. For comprehensive coverage of the congress, go to AuntMinnie.com's RADCcast @ RSNA special section.
