Germany's first professorship in musculoskeletal imaging has been established at Würzburg University Hospital, the German Röntgen Society (DRG) said in a blog post that explained the significance of the role.
Dr. Jan-Peter Grunz, a senior physician at the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the hospital, has been appointed to the position.

“Musculoskeletal radiology is a clinically and scientifically highly relevant subspecialty with central importance for orthopedics, trauma surgery, rheumatology, and sports medicine. The newly established professorship offers the opportunity to systematically strengthen musculoskeletal imaging in research, teaching, and continuing education, while simultaneously providing impetus for the strategic development of the field in Germany,” the DRG wrote.
Grunz completed his medical studies, doctorate, and postdoctoral lecturing qualification (Habilitation) at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg. Since 2020, he has headed the scientific working group for musculoskeletal imaging there. In 2024, he spent nine months as a visiting researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the research group of Dr. Scott Reeder.
