Video from EANM: President Erba on radiopharmaceuticals, PET, and AI

Vienna -- “All the dots are connected at the end,” European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) President Prof. Paola Anna Erba said in a video interview at EANM 2026. She pointed to rapid advances in radiopharmaceuticals, AI, and PET technology, supported by regulation, infrastructure, and supply chains.

Erba discussed the clinical impact of FDG-PET/CT in cardiovascular infections. The method now counts as a major criterion for diagnosing prosthetic valve endocarditis, she said, particularly in elderly patients with few systemic signs and in cases without microbiology results.

She also described a growing role for imaging in personalized treatment. “If the drug is not reaching the target, maybe better to go for another one,” she said.

Reflecting on her presidency, Erba pointed to closer cooperation with clinical societies, including a referral pathways project that begins with prostate cancer and involves patients. The aim is to move technology from centers of excellence into routine care. “We are not doing science ourselves. We are facilitating science,” she said.
