The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) is highlighting a joint project introduced by Spain's Ministry of Health that aims to study the presence and leadership of women in biomedical research.
The ministry introduced this initiative at its meeting “Towards Women’s Leadership in Clinical Trials: Data to Reduce the Gender Gap" to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, within the framework of the #InHealthNotWithoutWomen initiative, in which Women in Pharma also participates.
The initiative is promoted together with the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), the Federation of Spanish Scientific-Medical Associations (FACME), and Farmaindustria.
Ministry and society leaders highlighted the required integration of the gender dimension throughout the research process within the European R&D framework. They also noted data saying that while women represent 60% of the medical staff in the National Health System, they only hold about 33% of department head positions.
The leaders also noted that women represent 66% of the workforce in R&D and hold three out of every four jobs related to clinical trial management.
Finally, the leaders summarized that identifying gender-related barriers will help narrow the gap between men and women in clinical trials, with equality serving as a multiplier of scientific progress.
