Healthcare Informatics Insider

Dear Healthcare Informatics Insider,

There's a growing realization among radiologists that they must raise their profile and become more visible, and healthcare IT appears to have an essential role to play in this process. The emergence and integration of electronic patient records and clinical decision-support systems in hospitals, as well as the growing use of RIS/PACS for the timeliness of image and report delivery, and the development of software tools to assist therapy, can all help here.

A special seminar on this topic took place during last month's European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology meeting in Barcelona. For our report on this session, go to your Healthcare Informatics Digital Community, or click here.

Europe seems to lag behind the U.S. in the implementation of structured reporting, but these reports are becoming more widespread and their growth is inevitable, according to Belgian radiologist Dr. Jan Bosmans, PhD. I interviewed Bosmans and our regular columnist Dr. Neelam Dugar about this topic during the 2013 U.K. Radiological Congress in Liverpool. Click here to find out more.

Researchers have found that paging referring physicians to tell them their images are available in the PACS dramatically cuts the time between when studies are ready and when they are viewed. The findings have been published in the Journal of Digital Imaging. Get the story here.

An intriguing debate about the status and definition of teleradiology took place at the European Union summit on e-healthcare in Dublin. The decision by the e-health stakeholder group to establish teleradiology as a medical act was a major achievement, our editorial advisor Dr. Jan Schillebeeckx believes. Click here to learn more.
