Mainz -- A molecular pathologist who previously worked at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Joe Lennerz now serves as Medical Director for Pathology Innovation at Natera.
Drawing on his experience in both U.S. and European healthcare, he discusses integrated diagnostics, clinical AI, and the challenges of translating innovation into routine practice.
“What we really need to demonstrate is that these tools change outcomes,” Lennerz said. He shared the concept of shadow deployment as a promising approach to continuous evidence tracking, allowing AI systems to be evaluated alongside existing clinical workflows without influencing patient care.
“You can monitor in parallel to the existing workflow your AI tool [...] without necessarily providing the result to either physician or patient,” he explained.
In the interview he also explores the concept of the diagnostic architect and what the U.S. and Europe can learn from each other's approaches to medical innovation.
