HIMSS Analytics lauds hospitals for EMR use

HIMSS Analytics Europe announced that three hospitals -- in Italy, Spain, and Switzerland -- have achieved high levels of electronic medical record (EMR) adoption, reaching the stage 6 status of the organization's Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model.

The healthcare organizations are Azienda ULSS 18 Rovigo in the Veneto region of Italy, the Hospital Clinic Provincial de Barcelona, and the University Hospital (Inselspital) of Berne in Switzerland.

Launched in 2005 in North America, the EMR Adoption Model scale was created to track progress in adopting electronic medical records in hospitals and healthcare systems. It consists of an 8-step scale, ranked from 0 to 7.

Stage 6 is awarded when hospitals have achieved all requirements of previous stages, and a hospital-wide closed-loop prescription medication and clinical decision support system are in place in at least one inpatient service area.

In addition to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, which reached stage 7 in October, the healthcare organizations will be formally recognized for their achievements at the forthcoming HIMSS Europe CIO Summit being held in Geneva 20-22 November.
