PET/CT predicts brain tumors in melanoma patients
By Will Morton
PET/CT scans are showing clinical promise in predicting brain metastasis in melanoma patients. Researchers from Salzburg in Austria have unveiled their latest findings.
January 4, 2024
A 49-year-old patient with primary clinical stage III melanoma underwent F-18 FDG-PET. The primary tumor Breslow thickness was 6.5 mm. On initial F-18 FDG-PET images, this patient had a high SUVmax (52), resulting in limited survival with the occurrence of brain metastasis in the first year of follow-up (horizontal arrow). Notably, during the course of the treatment, the patient underwent surgical removal of the primary tumor as well as lymph node dissection, followed by neoadjuvant radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Fat-fluid levels sign: T1- and T2-weighted MRI shows cyst with thin septa, heterogeneous content, and fat-fluid levels, which is compatible with fat content, suggestive of galactocele. PET/CT shows impact of different COVID-19 vaccines
By Will Morton
The type of COVID-19 vaccine and the time interval between vaccination and PET/CT scans are key factors in minimizing false interpretations in cancer patients.
December 18, 2023
A 73-year-old woman with a suspicious lung nodule was referred to our division for F-18 FDG PET/CT exam. She was vaccinated four days before PET/CT. The lung nodule did not show any pathological FDG uptake; however, high tracer activity was detected on her right arm, where she was injected, and multiple hypermetabolic lymph nodes in the right axilla (arrows). Moreover, PET/CT showed high tracer activity in the liver (black arrows), spleen (triangular arrows), and bone marrow (small triangular arrows) as the result of systemic immune response after vaccination. The tracer defect in the liver was due to the known cyst. (A) fusion scan, (B) PET, (C) maximum intensity projection. Image courtesy of Scientific Reports.
