Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

It’s been a busy week or so for the breast imaging community. First up, a Dutch research group has found that evaluating screening mammograms with one human reader and AI led to more cancers being detected than conventional double reading, regardless of breast density. We caught up with Dr. Ritse Mann, PhD, and asked him to explain the significance of the findings.

Second, a team led by Prof. Yan Chen, PhD, from the University of Nottingham in the U.K., has reported that algorithms from the RSNA Screening Mammography Breast Cancer Detection AI Challenge performed surprisingly well. This study highlights the growing readiness of AI to support breast screening, she told us in a video interview.

Will robots be cooking more hospital food in the years to come? Quite possibly, judged by the apparent success of a pilot project in Tübingen, Germany. Radiologists Dr. Saif Afat and Prof. Dr. Mathias Goyen have both been won over by the cooking robot concept.

A few years ago, Dr. Hugues Brat gave up a top post in Swiss radiology to build a new career in radiology AI, and he’s now an influential figure in this fast-emerging field. His comments about the urgent need for regulation of AI in radiation protection deserve a close look.

Data are scarce about the payments made to medical doctors by device manufacturers, so we were immediately drawn to a comprehensive new Japanese study on this topic published in the European Journal of Radiology.

Finally, it’s been an exciting first week for us on Instagram. Our editorial team has really enjoyed learning about this medium, and we’ve greatly appreciated everyone’s encouragement and support.
