A native of Austria, Schoepf was an internationally recognized figure in radiology who shaped the field both scientifically and clinically for many years. His work in the field of cardiovascular imaging, in particular, received worldwide attention, the DRG noted in its statement.
"In 2013, Prof. Schoepf delivered the X-ray lecture at the German X-ray Congress -- a tribute to his outstanding achievements in research and teaching," stated the DRG. "Many colleagues in Germany remember him as an inspiring scientist, dedicated teacher, and appreciative person."
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) also noted Schoepf's death, calling him a genuine leader and saying "his influence lives on through all of us who were fortunate to know him."
Schoepf was a professor with appointments in radiology, medicine (cardiology), and pediatrics. He is credited with building the cardiovascular imaging program at MUSC in Charleston, U.S., where he served as director of the Division of Cardiovascular Imaging and vice chair for research development. He also held positions at the University of Erlangen in Germany, and Yale University and Emory University in the U.S.
In addition, Schoepf was a prolific author and served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals including Radiology, the Journal of the American Heart Association, the American Journal of Roentgenology, Academic Radiology, and European Radiology. In 2016, he was named associate editor of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging.
