Senator for Science, Health and Care Dr. Ina Czyborra presented the award for Hamm's outstanding service as long-time director of radiology at the Charité in Berlin and an internationally active scientist, according to a press release issued on 28 August by the German Roentgen Society (DRG).
Hamm initially began his training in pathology in 1978 and then switched to radiology. In 2022, AuntMinnieEurope featured a DRG Q&A with Hamm, who reflected on his life and career. He is credited with significantly shaping radiology at the Berlin, national, and European levels -- in research, teaching, and patient care.
Among Hamm's credits, he co-initiated and coordinated the Radiological Cooperative Network, RACOON, a project that joined the forces of university radiology departments to connect COVID-19 and other lung disease data.
"With the motto 'radiology without borders,' Prof. Hamm stands for international cooperation and scientific exchange," the DRG said.
Hamm was widely expected to retire in 2023 as chair and managing director at the Charité but had a change of heart. The senior positions he has presided over the Berlin, German and European radiological societies and ECR (2015 and 2018), and he is amember of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
