SPECT/CT outdoes planar imaging with lymph nodes
January 5, 2009 -- A newly released study in this month's issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine has found that SPECT/CT is better than planar imaging in accurately determining lymph node involvement at radioablation performed for thyroid cancer. Read More
Internal mammary node biopsies needed for better RT planning
December 31, 2008 -- A large study of breast cancer patients reveals that only 5% of patients with cancer-positive internal mammary nodes who receive radiation therapy (RT) will die of breast cancer recurrence within five years. This survival rate is comparable to patients with positive axillary lymph nodes who receive radiation therapy. Read More
Greatest pain comes four hours after MR arthrogram injection
December 26, 2008 -- Researchers in Switzerland have found that patients who undergo MR arthrography temporarily experience the most pain in the affected joints four hours after injection. The study also showed that the pain is most pronounced in younger patients, but the discomfort for virtually all patients disappears after one week. Read More
Adding CsI-based dual-energy imaging doesn't improve lung nodule detection
December 26, 2008 -- (Radiology Review) New research suggests that cesium iodide (CsI) detector-based dual-exposure dual-energy imaging, when added to chest radiography, does not significantly improve the detection or classification of pulmonary nodules. Read More
Ultrasound suitable for soft-tissue mass triage
December 24, 2008 -- Ultrasound can be a useful triage tool for evaluating soft-tissue masses, according to researchers from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the U.K. They prospectively studied 358 consecutive patients with soft-tissue masses who had received ultrasound exams over a six-month period. Interactive use of mammo CAD may improve mass detection
December 22, 2008 -- Interactively employing computer-aided detection (CAD) technology while reading mammograms may lead to increased detection of breast masses, according to research from Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands. Read More
FDG-PET/CT recommended for staging Hodgkin's disease
December 19, 2008 -- A British study confirms the high sensitivity and specificity of PET/CT in identifying focal bony disease in patients with Hodgkin's disease, according to research presented at the recent 2008 RSNA meeting. The results further suggest that the imaging modality can play an important role in initial staging of the disease. Read More
Same-day VC prep works, but some preps are better than others
December 16, 2008 -- Fecal tagging and reduced bowel preparation with iodinated oral contrast agents feasibly can be performed on the same day as a virtual colonoscopy exam, according to a new study from Italy presented at this month's RSNA meeting. Read More
Smartphone vs. PACS: Smartphone does just fine for skeletal trauma
December 4, 2008 -- CHICAGO - A new study from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London pitted a new-generation smartphone against a PACS diagnostic workstation for diagnostic quality display of skeletal trauma radiographs, and the smartphone held its own. Read More
CAD may boost lymph node detection
December 4, 2008 -- CHICAGO - An investigational computer-aided detection (CAD) system may allow for improved detection of lymph nodes, according to research from the University of Munich in Germany. Read More
