SERAM puts focus on AI's value in breast screening

The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has marked World Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special focus on the clinical benefits of AI algorithms for identifying suspicious lesions on mammograms.

Typically, AI systems classify mammograms into low risk, intermediate risk, and high risk, noted Dr. Sara Romero, PhD, of Reina Sofia University Hospital in Cordoba. These algorithms can serve as support tools to improve the performance of reading radiologists.

With AI systems generating landmarks that indicate potential suspicious areas on mammograms, reporting radiologists can focus more attention on the marked area and thus reduce the number of lesions that might be missed, she explained. The technology can also serve as a support tool for radiologists to reinforce their decision to consider a mammogram normal if the AI does not show any landmarks and, conversely.
