Accurate, fast soft-plaque measurement seen with coronary CTA
Automated measurement of soft plaque in the heart using coronary CT angiography (CTA) was accurate compared to the gold-standard modality, intravascular ultrasound, and was far faster than manual methods, concluded a new report published online this month in Radiology.

Bundling of CAD software boosts lung lesion detection at CT
Running CT lung images through multiple computer-aided detection (CAD) applications delivers better results than any single algorithm alone, researchers are finding. This phenomenon is unleashing a minitrend that may be discomforting to CAD developers concerned about the success of their systems.

CAD algorithm spots acute intracranial hemorrhage
In stroke treatment, time is brain, as they say, but the timely detection of acute intracranial hemorrhage can be difficult when dealing with subcentimeter lesions or inexperienced readers. A new computer-aided detection (CAD) system designed to detect blood clots in the brain could be a welcome addition.

Advanced VC tool serves up polyp locations for colonoscopy
Large polyps found at virtual colonoscopy are referred to optical colonoscopy for removal, and that's generally the end of the story. But VC-detected polyps can't always be found quickly and easily at colonoscopy, so an automated method of finding them might be just what the gastroenterologist ordered.

Study finds VC cost-effective if tiny polyps are ignored
Virtual colonoscopy is cost-effective for colorectal cancer screening, assuming that only patients with polyps 6 mm or larger are referred for polypectomy, a new French study has concluded. Removing the smallest lesions is not only prohibitively expensive, the yield in terms of additional cancer is minimal.

Advanced CT may have role in noncalcified plaque assessment
Advanced MDCT scanning may be ready to play an important role in assessing noncalcified coronary artery plaque, say German researchers, who used a 256-detector-row scanner and plaque-volume measurement software to compare interobserver variability in patients with different types of plaque.

CAD labels abdominal vessels with improved accuracy
A new computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithm automatically labels abdominal arteries extracted from CT images. The work-in-progress system is more accurate and less dependent on error-prone features than previous CAD schemes, say researchers from Nagoya, Japan.

Breast CAD helps find lobular carcinoma in situ lesions
Computer-aided detection (CAD) is making an elusive breast abnormality, lobular carcinoma in situ, a little clearer by highlighting the calcifications that often surround it, according to a new study from Wende Breast Care in Rochester, NY.

Combined PET/CT CAD improves lung nodule detection
Researchers in Japan have developed computer-aided detection (CAD) software that detects lung nodules in PET/CT images of lung cancer screening patients. Applying a combined CAD system to both modalities instead of CT or PET alone nearly doubled the number of solitary pulmonary nodules detected.

Enhanced reference standard boosts CTA accuracy
Borrowing a technique from the virtual colonoscopy playbook, researchers from South Carolina and Germany found that coronary CT angiography (CTA) is better than previously thought compared to catheter-based coronary angiography -- in fact the two tests are essentially equivalent, they said.
