3D MRI stress perfusion accurate for myocardium evaluation
New research from Germany shows how cardiac MRI can assess myocardial function by combining cine imaging, stress perfusion, and scar imaging to produce a high percentage of correct diagnoses and high-quality images, according to results published January 25 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

High-pitch CT cuts dose for patients with low heart rates
Austrian radiologists have found a way to cut the radiation dose of coronary CT angiography studies to as low as 1 mSv by using a high-pitch scanning protocol on a 128-slice scanner for patients with low heart rates.

Dual-phase DECT myocardial perfusion cuts time, dose
There's no need to acquire images during both stress and rest phases in dual-energy CT (DECT) myocardial perfusion imaging, say researchers from the U.S. and Germany. A stress phase combined with a delayed-enhancement phase performs just as well while reducing radiation dose by a third.

Second-reader CAD improves VC sensitivity
Computer-aided detection (CAD) works best in virtual colonoscopy when human readers do their job first, according to a new study. The use of CAD as a second reader improved both per-patient and per-polyp detection, while running CAD concurrently with the initial read was less effective.

CT calcium scoring alters cardiac risk estimates
Ten-year outcomes data from the Rotterdam coronary artery calcium (CAC) study underscore the prognostic power of adding CAC to a traditional risk stratification method. New results in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology show that CAC scores frequently change the risk category for future coronary events in asymptomatic individuals.

Unfilled vacancies and disparities persist in nuclear medicine
Dual PET imaging in Case Two illustrates a patient with discordant disease. FDG PET (b & d) shows FDG uptake in tail of pancreas primary lesion (yellow arrow), as well as multiple hepatic metastases (yellow boxes), with enlarged liver span. DOTATATE PET on left (a) shows several hepatic metastases that do not demonstrate DOTATATE uptake above background of liver parenchyma. The liver lesions in (c) demonstrate moderate FDG uptake in liver lesions, with no corresponding DOTATATE avidity (white box) or central photopenia (white arrow). This discordance in dual PET imaging corresponds to a NETPET score of 5. This suggests de-differentiated disease and a less favorable prognosis. The patient was not suitable for Lutate treatment and received chemotherapy.
