Single-beat dual-source CTA shrinks contrast dose
High-quality coronary CT angiography (CTA) images can be obtained using single-beat, high-pitch, dual-source CT and ultralow contrast doses, potentially reducing the risk of contrast nephropathy in the bargain, according to a new study in European Radiology.

CT perfusion can distinguish ischemic from infarcted myocardium
Dynamic perfusion CT is a young technique with a few limitations, but it can usually distinguish normal from ischemic myocardium -- and reliably separate myocardial infarction from ischemia, concluded a leading German expert at the 2013 International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.

Patient radiation tracking system moves toward going global
A radiation patient exposure tracking system has cleared technical and political hurdles to become a useful tool for monitoring a patient's exposure history and reducing the chance of overexposure to radiation. The system will eventually be operational throughout Europe, and perhaps beyond.

Pooled blood volume dual-energy CT enters clinical arena
Pooled blood volume images from dual-energy CT can be a powerful tool to differentiate clinically important pulmonary embolism from less important filling defects, and can even help clinicians manage pulmonary hypertension, concluded a talk at the 2013 International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.

Cardiotoxicity from radiotherapy makes case for imaging
Radiotherapy of the lungs and heart have saved many patients' lives, but because radiation also harms the heart, the organ should generally be evaluated following cancer treatment, especially for higher-risk groups of patients, according to a Belgian-authored article in the European Heart Journal.

Single-source CT equivalent to dual-source in TAVI planning
High-pitch single-source CT is as good as dual-source when planning for transaortic valve implantation (TAVI), an increasingly common procedure that often is effective and safer than open heart surgery, a leading European expert noted at the 2013 International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.

Coronary CT angiography not always first step for chest pain
Both the lowly stress test and the coronary calcium scan can help triage stable patients with chest pain, often leading to successful conservative management that sidesteps coronary CT angiography entirely, according a Dutch presentation at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.

Unfilled vacancies and disparities persist in nuclear medicine
Nuclear medicine specialists have high career satisfaction, but unfilled vacancies and career disparities persist, finds a workforce survey by the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
Dual PET imaging in Case Two illustrates a patient with discordant disease. FDG PET (b & d) shows FDG uptake in tail of pancreas primary lesion (yellow arrow), as well as multiple hepatic metastases (yellow boxes), with enlarged liver span. DOTATATE PET on left (a) shows several hepatic metastases that do not demonstrate DOTATATE uptake above background of liver parenchyma. The liver lesions in (c) demonstrate moderate FDG uptake in liver lesions, with no corresponding DOTATATE avidity (white box) or central photopenia (white arrow). This discordance in dual PET imaging corresponds to a NETPET score of 5. This suggests de-differentiated disease and a less favorable prognosis. The patient was not suitable for Lutate treatment and received chemotherapy.
