Dear Ultrasound Insider,
ECR 2026 has come and gone, but research from around the world that offered fresh perspectives on imaging still resonates. For ultrasound, presenters discussed how the modality can be used for musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging, thyroid imaging, breast imaging, and more.
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) was also in the spotlight at ECR. In one talk, Thérèse Herlihy, PhD, from University College Dublin in Ireland, shared how radiographers can expand their scope of practice when using POCUS. Find out what she had to say on this matter in this edition’s featured story.
In other news, researchers from Careggi University Hospital in Florence, Italy, found that ultrasound-guided cryoablation is safe, effective, and well-tolerated by women with breast cancer. This included treatment of larger tumors, with patients reporting more satisfaction compared to conventional surgery.
In more interventional updates, a team out of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, reported success from MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) in improving the lesion normalized contrast of chronic brain lesions. It also found that T1/T2-weighted MRgFUS approaches reduce interobserver variability and measurement error.
There’s also good news for marathon runners. University of Zurich researchers found via echocardiography that short-term cardiac changes after endurance running are reversible. They also found that left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular diastolic function changed significantly, but these values remained within normal limits.
And as AI continues its expansion into imaging, vendors have a lot to think about when trying to separate themselves from the competition. Aiyana Amess and Mustafa Hassan, PhD, both of Signify Research, penned a column outlining how vendors can evolve their sales strategies, build holistic portfolios, and use generative AI to speed up development.
