The Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) joined forces with other medical associations from 10 to 14 June in Italy’s northwest coastal region of Liguria to boost awareness of cancer prevention.
Society members gathered with the Italian Association of Medical Oncology, the AIRC Foundation, and the AIOM Foundation in Genoa at the “Villaggio Italia” (Calata Mandraccio) in the final stage of the Vespucci World Tour. Over the five-day period, they offered advice to local citizens on cancer risk factors, such as alcohol consumption, the society said in a blog post.

“Scientific studies demonstrate with certainty the causal role of the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the onset of various types of neoplasms, including tumors of the esophagus, liver, colorectal, breast, lips and oral cavity, larynx, and pharynx. 4% of total cancer cases can be traced back to this habit,” wrote Dr. Francesco Perrone, president of the AIOM, and Dr. Nicoletta Gandolfo, president of SIRM.
Every year in Liguria, there are an estimated 12,000 new cases of cancer, approximately 40% of which can be avoided by adopting healthy lifestyles combined with adhering to screening programs for early diagnosis, the SIRM noted.
