Cyprus assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) on 1 January, which the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) believes provides opportunities for nuclear medicine.
The EU presidency highlights the importance of quality of life, social cohesion, and access to essential services, including healthcare. It also stresses the need for predictable regulation, support for innovation, and stronger internal capacity, the EANM noted in a statement posted on 5 January.
For the EANM, these discussions matter because radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine services rely on specialized production, research, and regulatory frameworks that may not fit neatly into standard policy categories.
The EANM added that continued support for EU research frameworks and an emphasis on reducing unnecessary administrative burden are needed for the development and clinical adoption of new diagnostic and therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine.
The association added that this period offers an opportunity to further dialogue about the importance of nuclear medicine with EU institutions and member states.
