ESUR releases updated contrast agent guidelines

The European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) has published a revised version of its contrast agent guidelines.

The ESUR’s Contrast Media Safety Committee (CMSC) -- under the direction of Chair Prof. Olivier Clément, Vice Chair Dr. Laura Romanini, Secretary Dr. Aart van der Molen, and Coordinating Author Dr. Katerina Deike -- has developed the updated guidelines. This and future versions of the guidelines will also be published in electronic form on the ESUR webpage; the guidelines will be updated annually, the CMSC said, as a “permanent work in progress.”

The new guidelines include updated sections on topics such as contrast agent hypersensitivity and extravasation, recommended waiting times between successive contrast agent administrations, analytical interference of contrast agents with lab tests, and recommendations for the safe use of contrast agents in patients with myasthenia gravis and for hysterosalpingography.

"Over the years, more than 200,000 copies of the booklet have been printed, and it has been translated into many languages," the CMSC noted. "Although most contrast agents in current use have been on the market for many years, minor changes occur in their adverse reaction pattern and new observations are reported."

While the update includes key recommendations, the relevant ESUR CMSC guideline publication should be consulted for comprehensive information on particular topics, the committee added.

The 2025 Contrast Agent Guidelines are available for download on ESUR’s website.
