Death penalty for Iranian radiologist may be canceled

A death sentence for an Iranian radiologist convicted on 5 December of "waging war against God" has been canceled, according to a report by IranWire. No official announcement has been made, however.

Dr. Hamid Ghareh Hassanlou, 53, has been sentenced for an alleged role in the death of a member of the paramilitary Basij force, while his wife was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the same case, according to IranWire. His sister said that she has now been informed that the death sentence has been canceled. However, the doctor's lawyer also said he has not received an official communication regarding the cancelation of the sentence, according to the article.
