The MEDIRAD project has launched recommendations aimed at enhancing the protection of patients and staff exposed to low doses of radiation during imaging.

The recommendations, which are based on feedback from 80 stakeholders from international and European organizations, focus on consolidating patient data repositories across Europe, optimizing radiation-based protocols for diagnostics and therapy, further enhancing radiation protection for patients and staff, and guiding future research in Europe.

Overall, the recommendations call for merging data repositories, protocols, disciplines, and communities to optimize existing procedures, foster collaboration, and explore new technologies and research avenues.

The MEDIRAD project, which represents an investment of around 10 million euros, is coordinated by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), a research support organization established by the European Society of Radiology (ESR). The project, which began about five years ago, received funding from Euratom research and training program 2014‐2018 under grant agreement No 755523.
