The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has released a poster that outlines radiology's role in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

The poster highlights six key points:

  • Early detection. Diagnostic imaging can identify precancerous lesions and tumors in early stages.
  • Confirmation of diagnosis. Imaging can confirm symptomatic disease and illuminate structural changes in the body related to cancer.
  • Staging. Imaging helps clinicians examine and stage the tumor area.
  • Planning and treatment assessment. Imaging helps clinicians plan and evaluate cancer treatment.
  • Less invasive treatment. Interventional radiology offers an alternative to surgery that can reduce risk of complications.
  • Follow-up. Imaging helps clinicians track patient outcomes post-treatment.

Around 280,100 new cases of cancer are anticipated in Spain in 2022, according to the Spanish network of cancer registries (REDECAN). This figure is expected to rise to 341,000 by 2040.

"The role of radiology professionals is essential for decision-making in the management and personalized treatment of cancer patients," SERAM said in a statement issued for World Cancer Day on 4 February.
