South African facility resumes Mo-99 production

NTP Radioisotopes' Pelindaba nuclear facility in South Africa is back online producing molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), according to a February 21 report by Reuters.

The country's nuclear regulator closed down the operation last November due to a suspected hydrogen leak.

NTP Radioisotopes, a subsidiary of state-owned South African Nuclear Energy (Necsa), began shipments of the medical isotope to international customers on February 20, according to an article from ESI Africa.

Phumzile Tshelane, Nesca's CEO, thanked customers in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Middle East, and South Africa "who showed their unwavering support," ESI Africa reported.
