Screening is best reserved for those expected to live longer
By
Eric Barnes
Patients signing up for breast or colon cancer screening should have a minimum remaining life expectancy of at least 10 years to boost the chances of benefiting from the exams and overcoming their inherent risks, say researchers from the University of California, San Francisco in an article in

CADx outperforms radiologists in characterizing liver lesions
By
Erik L. Ridley
German researchers have found that a computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) system can do better than radiologists for characterizing indeterminate liver lesions, but they believe CAD systems should work more like radiologists rather than relying too heavily on image analysis.

CAD helps detect smaller lesions on CT colonography
By
Erik L. Ridley
At a cost of just a minute or two of extra interpretation time, computer-aided detection (CAD) software can significantly improve the performance of experienced readers in finding polyps 6 to 9 mm in size on CT colonography studies, according to a study by Italian researchers published online in

Dutch unveil substantial new data on colorectal screening
By
Philip Ward
As the cost-effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening comes under growing scrutiny across Europe, detailed, up-to-date analysis and statistics involving more than 1,100 patients recruited into the Dutch population-based screening trial look certain to attract widespread attention.

Experts give tips & tricks for imaging Crohn's patients
By
Philip Ward
Used properly, MRI is a sensitive, specific, safe, and reliable tool for evaluating Crohn's disease activity and complications, and is useful for assessing the extent and severity of the disease, according to gastrointestinal specialists from the U.K.

Jury's still out on CT colonography's cost-effectiveness
By
Rebekah Moan
Overriding evidence of CT colonography's cost-effectiveness remains absent, the main problem being that most studies have different comparators and parameter values, according to new analysis by Irish researchers.

How to handle noncooperative patients in abdominal MRI
By
Philip Ward
Getting images of sufficient quality for clinical evaluation in children as well as agitated or sedated patients represents a major challenge in abdominal MRI because the need for many sequences requires a breath-hold of about 15-20 seconds. Portuguese radiologists have outlined how to address this problem.

ESGAR publishes consensus statement on CT colonography
By
Eric Barnes
The European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) has published its first update on CT colonography (CTC) guidelines since 2007. Its working group on CTC has endorsed 86 statements, reaching near-complete agreement on 71 of the 86 items relating to critical practice areas affecting CTC.

DWI-MRI monitors response to colorectal cancer treatment
By
Wayne Forrest
The ability of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to create good reproducibility, correlate with histopathology, and enhance sensitivity to assess treatment results may make MRI an "excellent tool" to monitor response in metastatic colorectal cancer patients, according to a new Dutch study.

2 radiographers read CTC studies as well as 1 radiologist
By
Eric Barnes
When it comes to reading CT colonography (CTC) studies, a radiographer is no match for a trained radiologist. But two radiographers are another matter entirely: They were equivalent to, and maybe slightly better than, a single radiologist, according to a new Dutch study in

CAD-first scheme speeds virtual colonoscopy reads
By
Eric Barnes
Does virtual colonoscopy need the kind of speed that only computer-aided detection (CAD) can provide? An advanced reading technique cut interpretation times to a minimum by using CAD first for polyp detection -- followed by the radiologist, who looked only at CAD results, according to a new study from Europe and the U.S. in
