Momentum gathers behind MRI for lung cancer screening
By
Abraham Kim
CHICAGO - Nearly a decade ago, CT surpassed x-ray as the imaging modality of choice for lung cancer screening. But could there be an even better option for the test? Researchers from the U.S., Switzerland, and Germany made the case for MRI in a session on Monday at RSNA 2018.

Dutch develop novel 3D method to track central airways
By
Cynthia E. Keen
A group from Amsterdam has examined conebeam CT projections of a 3D-printed thorax phantom and used prototype software for template generation, template matching, and triangulation to determine bronchus motion. They think markerless 3D monitoring can help in radiotherapy.

NELSON gives Europeans go-ahead for CT lung screening
By
Abraham Kim
CT lung cancer screening got a big boost this week from researchers in the Dutch-Belgian Randomized Lung Cancer Screening (NELSON) trial, who at the 2018 World Conference on Lung Cancer in Toronto reported a 26% mortality reduction for men in the trial. The findings could give the green light to CT lung screening in Europe.

Fast thoracic MRI emerges as alternative to chest x-ray
By
Rebekah Moan
How does MRI compare with chest x-ray in detecting cardiac and noncardiac findings? Very similarly, according to new research from Italy. Both modalities identified pulmonary nodules, had similar pulmonary nodule detection rates, and more.

Low-dose CT can deliver cost-effective lung screening
By
Frances Rylands-Monk
A Swiss modeling study showed a national low-dose CT screening program for lung cancer can be cost-effective. The study, published in the July issue of
Lung Cancer
, sought to clarify the impact of screening across a high-income population and revealed it may reduce mortality by 6% to 15%.

Opinion: Radiographers do not equal radiologists
By
Dr. Emanuele Neri
Studies that compare the reading skills of radiographers against those of radiologists are flawed, says Dr. Emanuele Neri. Trying to prove that "radiographers = radiologists" is the wrong exercise because the skillsets of the two groups are so different, but "radiographers + radiologists = better care" is valid, he writes.
