It is not just Brexit !
The NHS is in a mess becos of a large number of useless managers who have no understanding of the concept of clinical care and beaurocrats who have no common sense in managing supply and demand. The chain of useless nominal managers can be shocking, with very few exceptional managers.
I led a large department of 40 Consultants and as Interventional Radiologist, and Clinical Director spent long hours upto 17-18 PA’s a week, to manage the demand, whilst being undermined by unscrupulous colleagues and managers who stuck to personal agendas and clueless to manage the crisis. Then, I left.
Disgusted by the lack of recognition, despite the poor pay, harassment by management and losing all enthusiasm, many other Radiologists left to places where they were treated with respect, higher pay and free from red tape.
Gone are the days where people felt ‘ NHS jobs were for life’ . Bad managers should never be tolerated if one is committed to their roles and ethics. Recruiting Radiologists for NHS in a competitive health sector with vast differences in pay and lifestyle is an uphill task, never to be accomplished without pay incentives.
NHS is still one of best framework in providing healthcare for the country, but needs a major overhaul of its operators.
Believe me!; it is harder to bear the effects of losing well-trained Radiologists from UK than recruiting from overseas.
Sub-specialist Radiologists should get a higher scale for the specialised work they do. Pay should be weighted based on complexity, performance and numbers rather than fixed pay.
The RCR and GMC have to work together in understanding the crisis and recruitment.
Artificial Intelligence is still a decade away to make its real impact on delivery of a seamless service.
Just my thoughts....
