Dutch researchers revive 115-year-old x-ray machine
In a new article this week in Radiology, Dutch researchers fired up a 115-year-old x-ray machine, comparing its image quality and radiation dose with current technology. They found that the vintage system delivered a radiation dose that's 1,500 times the level of modern x-ray systems.

Exposure to medical radiation in the U.K. is lower than in other countries, although the level of dose exposure has been creeping higher over the years, according to a new study released January 4 by the U.K. Health Protection Agency.

Exposure index values vary widely between CR systems
Imaging facilities trying to reduce digital x-ray dose are turning to exposure index (EI) values to see how much radiation patients receive. New research indicates that while this is a good idea for digital radiography, it's not so hot for computed radiography (CR) due to wide variation in EI measures.
