U.K. private ultrasound clinics pose risk to expectant mothers

Private ultrasound clinics in the U.K. are putting expectant mothers and their babies at risk, according to a BBC report posted on 2 November.

The Society of Radiographers (SoR) has sounded an alarm regarding the use of unqualified nonspecialists to perform prenatal ultrasound before the regular NHS 20-week check, and that pregnant women are being "incorrectly diagnosed with serious health conditions and given dangerous advice," according to the BBC.

But in addition to incorrect diagnoses, there have been cases of missed diagnoses of fetal conditions such as spina bifida, polycystic kidneys, and maternal conditions such as ectopic pregnancies.

The SoR is calling for "sonographer" to become "a protected job title in the U.K. in the same way as dietician, podiatrist, art therapist or radiographer [titles are]," the BBC reported.
