The president of the U.K. Royal College of Radiologists, Dr. Kath Halliday, has issued a strong response to new official patient waiting times for England. Services are chronically overwhelmed and struggling to provide timely treatment and care for patients, she said.

Responding to a May NHS England report about diagnostic imaging exam wait times for the National Health Service (NHS) in England, she said the data "shows what we doctors see every day -- services are chronically overwhelmed and struggling to provide timely treatment and care for patients."

"The Government's recent commitment to expanding the workforce is welcome, but this plan will unfortunately not reduce waiting lists in the short term. We need further action to support patients today -- including making more of the capacity we have and encouraging our highly trained staff to stay working in the system," noted Halliday, from the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
