Northern Ireland system to review radiologist reports

2020 09 29 18 15 5771 Medical Error 400

A healthcare system in Northern Ireland has started a review into the image reporting of 13,030 images that were interpreted by a locum radiologist, according to a news article published 29 June in BallymoneyTimes.

Northern Health and Social Care Trust said that the review involves the images of 9,091 patients. Experts expect about 7% may have experienced a delay in diagnosis due to poor image reporting.

Images under review were reported between July 2019 and February 2020 that were acquired at Antrim Area Hospital, Whiteabbey Hospital, Mid Ulster Hospital, Causeway Hospital, and Ballymena Health and Care Centre, according to the article.

Patients involved in the review have been notified via a letter. The review, which will be conducted by an external provider, is expected to commence in October.
