Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common inflammatory joint disease, and radiography is considered the gold standard for visualizing and quantifying it. But in an era when physicians are trying to reduce patient exposure to radiation, musculoskeletal ultrasound is being increasingly used for this application.

So how well does ultrasound perform when it comes to detecting joint erosion? French researchers say it does the job just fine -- or even better when compared with radiography, according to a new study we're highlighting in this month's Ultrasound Community.
